Summary

The research related to the relationship between oral language and reading comprehension is discussed with a particular focus on oral language assessment. Listening comprehension, vocabulary and word structure, syntax, discourse, and pragmatics are presented with respect to their respective contributions to reading comprehension and tools for assessment. The demands for scholastic language in young learners are reviewed with reference to Boehm's research on the skills needed for success in the classroom.
