Abstract

Amino resins are a broad class of materials made by controlled reaction of an aldehyde with a compound containing an amino group. The two most important amino resins are obtained by interaction of formaldehyde with either urea or melamine, and they are used in different composite applications. Some of the possible uses of these resins are in bonding of glass or mineral fiber mats, binders for foundry cores and coated abrasive papers, and orthopedic casts and bandages. Composition, some typical properties, and processes for the urea–formaldehyde and melamine–formaldehyde resins are presented in this article. Moreover, a discussion on the economic aspect is presented. Because of formaldehyde toxicity, in conclusion to the article, health and safety factors are discussed.
