Composite materials provide the designer with freedom to tailor mechanical properties and load response of the structure to obtain the maximum efficiency in weight. Anisotropic mechanical behavior of the employed materials and special failure modes make the analytical study and design of a composite structure complicated. In this article, elementary concepts for composite material constituents selection and tools for mechanical design of composite structures using fiber-reinforced composite materials are introduced. Illustrations of fundamental mechanical properties of composite materials and design guidelines for forming laminated composite structures are outlined.
