Abstract

Rotors are the systems allowing helicopters to flight, providing lift, and directional thrusts. Composite materials are nowadays widely used in rotor components construction and, namely, for blades and hubs. Typical applications are described. The evolution in the usage of fibrous composites from the simple substitution of metals to the current exploitation of peculiar characteristics is evaluated. The scenario of application for other nonfibrous composite materials is also considered. Other aspects such as design for manufacturing and airworthiness requirements are considered.
