Summary

This chapter presents the rules for storage batteries defined in Section 14 of Part One of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) Handbook. Unlike coal-handling areas and other hazardous areas addressed by Rule 127-Classified Locations, storage battery areas are not considered as classified locations by the NESC. The chapter addresses the special concerns relating to ignition of hydrogen, damage to the equipment, and potential personnel-related issues. The requirements of Section 14 provide adequate safety for the maintenance and operation of battery areas. The section also highlights the aspects of ventilation, the design of racks that support the cells, and floors and illumination in battery areas.
