Summary

This chapter focuses on the lower sublayers of the Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) copper physical layers (PHYs). It specifically reviews the 10PASS-TS and 2BASE-TL physical layers with regard to the functionality of their physical medium attachment (PMA) and physical medium dependent (PMD) sublayers. The PMA and PDM sub-layers were derived from Very High Bit Rate DSL (VDSL) and single-pair high-speed DSL (SHDSL). The chapter presents the modulation techniques used for each of the two EFM copper PHYs, and identifies the specific choices that were made by the EFM task force with regard to optional features. It also discusses performance characteristics that are described in Annexes 62A, 62B, 62C, 63A, and 63B of IEEE Standard 802.3ah-2004.
