Summary

This chapter introduces the fiber optic specifications in Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM). It reviews the architectural positioning of the PMD in the layering model and then looks at some of the philosophies that guide the PMD choices. The chapter then presents the style and content of a typical optical clause in Ethernet. It introduces the key frameworks that are common to all the optical interfaces in EFM. There are four basic frameworks: fiber plant, link model, parameters and bit error ratio (BER). The chapter looks at the typical transmit, receive and cabling parameter tables using 100BASE-LX as an example. It concludes by introducing the optical tests and looking at some key issues that effect testing and design of optical transceivers. For many years we measured the quality of an optical link by looking at the jitter content of the signal at various points in its path.
