Summary

This chapter introduces EPON (Ethernet passive optical network) and then looks at each of the point-to-multipoint (P2MP) optical families in detail. It starts by giving a general background and motivation for EPON. The chapter looks at a typical block diagram of a transceiver and its sub-assemblies highlighting the differences between EPON transceivers and their point-to-point (P2P) counterparts. It discusses some high-level architectural decisions that apply to all the point-to-multipoint optical families. Next, the chapter looks at each family of point-to-multipoint by first defining the market requirements and then analyzing the transmit and receive technologies. For each family, it also calculates the power budgets. The chapter concludes with a discussion of interoperability between the OLTs and ONUs of the 1000BASE-PX10 family with the 1000BASE-PX20 family and few examples of some EPON topologies.
