This chapter discusses the multipoint control protocol (MPCP) and the multipoint MAC control sublayer for Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs). It provides an overview of the protocol, and then describes the messages that the protocol employs. The chapter examines the registration process, as well as the mechanisms that are used to recover from failure events. It also demonstrates that the facilities provided by the protocol support a layered model that truly and faithfully emulates a network of point-to-point Ethernet links. Multipoint MAC control is an instance of the MAC control sublayer, augmenting the functionality of the Pause protocol with the MPCP. Multipoint control protocol data unit (MPCPDU) are untagged MAC control frames. The structure of an MPCPDU is shown in the chapter.
