Summary

This chapter focuses on the ONU management control interface (OMCI). It then establishes the OMCI communications channel (OMCC). Messages exchanged across the G-PON OMCC are encapsulated in GEM frames, just like any other G-PON traffic. The chapter then focuses on fundamentals of the OMCI information model, message exchange, and actions. OMCI messages expose one additional degree of granularity in the information model, namely individual attributes within the managed entity (ME) instance. The chapter explains ONU state model including administrative state and operational state. OMCI supports alarm reporting control (ARC) on selected ME classes: cardholders, the ANI (the PON port), and the physical ports on the subscriber side (UNIs). The chapter finally focuses on equipment management, software management, reach extender management and PON maintenance.
