Multimedia broadcast/multicast service (MBMS) service is a point-to-multipoint service provided by 3GPP systems including E-UTRAN, UTRAN, and GERAN. It provides user data from a single network entity to multiple UEs. The MBMS are transmitted on the same carrier frequencies used by mobile operators to transmit normal services such as voice calls and the internet. The MBMS bearer service offers two modes in 3GPP systems are broadcast mode and multicast mode. Broadcast-multicast service center (BM-SC), multi-cell/multicast coordination entity (MCE) and MBMS Gateway are introduced to the EPC and E-UTRAN for support of the MBMS. The E-UTRAN provides two point-to-multipoint logical channels such as multicast control channel (MCCH) and multicast traffic channel (MTCH) for the MBMS on the radio interface. In Release 10, 3GPP enhanced the MBMS with the MBMS Counting procedure.
