Summary
The nail may act as a “window” to the body. Changes in the nail shape or color may indicate a systemic disorder or a disease long before other symptoms appear. Examination of clinical nail changes has historically given the observer clues to the patient's underlying systemic illness. Nail changes may provide hints for diseases of cardiac, circulatory, respiratory, gastrointestinal, hepatic, renal, genitourinary, reproductive, endocrine, nervous, psychological, musculoskeletal, hematological, lymphatic, connective tissue, immunological, nutritional and metabolic systems.
