Summary

Neurologic complications of cardiac surgery and interventional procedures for cardiac disease are important determinants of patient outcome. Ischemic stroke following cardiac surgery increases mortality by 3- to 5-fold, increases critical care days and hospital length of stay, and increases the likelihood of discharge to a care facility. For some patients, treatment options are limited to an accurate diagnosis and supportive care, but for other select patients with acute ischemic stroke, urgent evaluation and endovascular revascularization strategies can significantly improve outcomes.
