Summary
This chapter describes eating disorders (EDs) in childhood and adolescence and highlights some of the important differences and considerations when working with this age group. In this chapter, assessment and treatment issues are discussed predominantly with ‘non-specialist’ clinicians in mind although it is hoped that it will also be of interest to more specialist practitioners. The chapter considers how generic outpatient teams might effectively manage the assessment and treatment of EDs in young people when required. A range of psychological interventions is available for young people with EDs, although there remains a lack of good quality evidence about what works with this group. The evidence base of some of the major psychological interventions is discussed.
