Summary
Children and adolescents with eating disorders (EDs) might be involved with a variety of services through the course of their treatment and recovery. The majority will be able to receive support and treatment they require as an outpatient. This chapter describes the potential role of other services and different levels of service provision for young people with EDs from the least intensive (e.g. self-help) to the most intensive (e.g. inpatient care). The role of the clinical psychologist in service provision and issues relating to transitions between services is also considered. Whilst the majority of young people with EDs will require support from mental health services, they are also likely to have involvement with non-mental health organizations. Services at this level can play an important role in mental health promotion, early identification of EDs, physical assessment and management and also often act as gatekeepers to more specialist services when required.
