The introductory chapter provides general information about iodine, including historical background, general classification, structure, and reactivity of polyvalent iodine compounds. The 1983 IUPAC rules (the ‘Lambda Convention’) for naming polycoordinated iodine derivatives are discussed, and a detailed table of common names of all important organic and inorganic compounds of iodine(III), iodine(V), and iodine(VII) is given. A molecular orbital description of hypervalent bonding as the L—I—L three-center-four-electron bond is provided, and general structural features and principles of reactivity of hypervalent iodine compounds are summarized.
