Summary

Osteocytes are thought to function as a network of sensory cells mediating the effects of mechanical loading through this extensive lacunocanalicular network. The chapter focuses on the ontogeny, apoptosis and modification of the microenvironment of osteocytes. It describes the mechanosensation and transduction mechanisms. Further, it discusses the role of gap junctions and hemichannels in osteocyte communication. Finally, the chapter talks about the potential role of osteocytes in bone disease. It is most likely that osteocytes utilize undiscovered specific molecules to regulate bone remodeling.
