Summary

This chapter unravels and predicts the role of diagenetic alterations in porosity preservation and destruction in the deeply buried gas condensate reservoir sandstones of the Devonian Jauf Formation, eastern Saudi Arabia. Eogenetic alterations include: (i) formation of grain-coating clays in tidal estuarine sandstones of the transgressive systems tract (TST) and highstand systems tract (HST); (ii) cementation by ferroan dolomite/ankerite, particularly below maximum flooding surface in the tidal estuarine TST sandstones;and (iii) dissolution and kaolinization of mica, mud intraclasts and feldspars in the HST sandstones, which are attributed to meteoric water flux during fall in the relative sea-level. Finally, the chapter demonstrates that linking diagenesis to sequence stratigraphy allows better elucidation and prediction of the spatial and temporal distribution of the impact of diagenetic alterations on reservoir-quality modifications in tidal estuarine and shoreface sandstones.
