Summary

This chapter focuses on the sandstones of the Viking Formation in the Bayhurst gas pools and the neighbouring area to the north-east, in south-western Saskatchewan. The Viking sandstones in this area host several oil and gas pools and are targets of on-going exploration, demanding a better understanding of the reservoir architecture and properties and their controlling factors. A preliminary sequence stratigraphic framework of the Viking Formation has been established in the Bayhurst gas pools. This model is refined and extended to the area north-east of Bayhurst in the chapter. The chapter focuses on the diagenesis of the Viking sandstones, with particular emphasis on petrography of the sandstones and fluid inclusions, and carbon and oxygen isotopes of the carbonate cements. It shows that sea-level fluctuations can be recorded in early diagenetic processes in coastal sediments, and that petrographic and geochemical studies can be a useful tool in sequence stratigraphic analysis.
