Summary

This introductory chapter of Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation: Bridging the Gap between Global Commitment and Local Action provides a glimpse of the themes covered in the book. The book addresses two key themes in biodiversity conservation and monitoring, bringing together insights from science and policy spheres. The first is evaluating a variety of approaches to biodiversity monitoring that could help to provide indicators, including species-based indicators of biodiversity change, and indicators of the pressures on biodiversity, at national to global scales. The second is the steps needed to reduce the barriers for successful implementation of such approaches. Specifically the chapter focuses on addressing challenges faced by countries in meeting their obligations under the biodiversity conventions, particularly convention on biological diversity (CBD), and to help bridge the gap between international commitments and local action.
