Summary

Determinants of increased effectiveness of education include, but are not limited to, longer duration of the educational experience, optimal group composition, needs assessment before the start, active participation, individualization, and involvement of local opinion leaders. Education is often a necessary first step in the implementation of innovations. Education is particularly relevant in the context of a broader implementation program. This chapter focuses on the effectiveness of educational strategies on healthcare professionals, aimed at better implementation of innovations or best practices. It first provides some theoretical background, then describes a variety of educational strategies and their effectiveness. It then turns to potential determinants of the effect of education, a list which can be used to improve the impact of educational interventions on performance and outcomes.
