Summary

We normally experience color as a result of the interaction between light, materials, and our visual apparatus, eye and brain. Light consists of a certain range of electromagnetic radiation, whose basic nature and mode of transport are not yet fully known. A blackbody absorbs and emits energy indiscriminately at all wavelengths. At a given temperature, the emission of such matter can be calculated on a theoretical basis. Light can also be created by processes not based on the absorption of energy such as: electroluminescence, chemiluminescence, and photoluminescence. The most spectacular natural display of refraction is the rainbow. Refraction effects can also be seen in cut crystal, diamonds, or other gemstones having “fire.” The chapter also discusses the concepts of diffraction, molecular orbitals, electrical conductors and semiconductors.
