Summary

Distillation remains the dominant separation method used in the chemical process industry, and for this reason a large amount of knowledge was developed for many years concerning its design and control. This chapter provides the key principles of (optimal) design, control, sizing and economics of distillation. Several approaches are presented regarding the optimal design and control of distillation columns, covering the heuristic or rigorous optimization of a design, heat-integration options, feed preheating, intermediate heat exchangers, single-end and dual-end control, constraint and multivariable control. These are completed by a reliable set of methods and relationships for sizing distillation equipment (e.g., column shell, column internals, heat exchangers, decanters, pumps, and compressors), estimating equipment cost, and specifying energy and chemicals costs.
