Summary

A cyclic distillation column has an operating cycle consisting of two key operations: a vapor flow period when vapor flows upwards through the column and liquid remains stationary on each plate, and a liquid flow period when the vapor flow is stopped, reflux and feed liquid are supplied, and the liquid is dropped from each tray to the one below, by gravity. This chapter gives an overview of the cyclic distillation processes, and describes the working principle based on separate phase movement (SPM), while also providing details related to the modeling, design and control of such systems. Several industrial case studies are also included to illustrate the benefits of this novel technology.
