Summary

Policy-makers are making efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of their cities and urban regions. This book is about these policies and their implications for place-making and competitive cities. Policies driven by ‘classic’ location theory, cluster policies, ‘creative class’ policies aimed at attracting ‘talent’, and policies that connect with pathways, place and personal networks are all equally dealt with, while focusing on important European metropolitan areas, and bearing in mind that policies should be tailored to specific local contexts. In this chapter, the main questions to be answered by the book are outlined.
