Summary

Basic concepts of ultrasound are presented to aid learning cerebrovascular ultrasound methods and to prepare for examinations that test the knowledge of technology, a prerequisite for testing the clinical applications. Principles of brightness-modulated (B-mode), color flow imaging, and Doppler assessments of the vasculature and discussed along with typical artifacts and bioeffects. These principles are discussed in particular as they apply to carotid and transcranial duplex as well as transcranial Doppler technologies.
