Summary

Main concepts of the systemic and cerebral hemodynamics are presented to aid learning diagnostic ultrasound and to prepare for examinations that are focused on cerebrovascular ultrasound. In addition, this review covers hemodynamic principles that are helpful in interpretation and the differential diagnosis of carotid and transcranial duplex as well as transcranial Doppler studies. In particular, the concepts of resistance, arterial blood pressure, and hemodynamic changes with a variety of systemic and local circulatory conditions, including the so-called Spencer's curve, are presented.
