Summary

This chapter summarizes some of the key points covered in Sustainability: How the Cosmetics Industry is Greening up and gives future growth projections. The social dimension is not a focus when cosmetic companies undertake sustainability initiatives. If companies are to call themselves truly sustainable, they need to improve their social footprints. A reason why cosmetic and ingredient firms do not focus on the social aspect is the difficulty in measuring and tracking social elements. The government has an important role in encouraging sustainability. It is, however, important that legislation represents industry best practice and is not based on lofty, unachievable goals. The chapter highlights sustainability areas of improvement for cosmetic and ingredient firms. In spite of its historic association with unethical business practices, the cosmetics industry is doing fairly well in terms of sustainability performance.
