This chapter focuses first on the complexity of the issues surrounding energy and waste management generally in the cosmetics industry. Next, it shifts to one company Aveda -and focuses on how this industry leader has evolved in its approaches to innovative energy and waste management practices. Aveda sets an example for environmental leadership and responsibility. Aveda's achievements in the areas of energy and waste have been at the forefront of the cosmetics industry, but much remains to be done as the needs of the planet and society become ever more critical and the Aveda business continues to grow. The chapter deals with the achievements and opportunities of Aveda. Growth through the 1990s gave Aveda the opportunity to leverage key suppliers in conjunction with innovations in environmental packaging technology and establish a leadership role on packaging in the cosmetics industry.
