Summary

New technologies are increasingly developed to reduce the impacts of animal manure on the environment. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a methodology that can be used to compare the environmental impacts of products or services providing the same function and has been applied in numerous instances to compare different manure management systems. This chapter describes the LCA methodology and gives some examples of applications to manure management systems with the purpose of enabling the reader to peruse and critically evaluate LCA papers and reports.
