Summary

In this chapter the author argues that sustainable‐use tropical forest reserves, coexisting with varying densities of human residents and their extractive activities, play a huge role in capturing representative biotas and key ecosystem services, but present decisive challenges in biodiversity conservation. The chapter reviews the global emergence of sustainable‐use reserves (SURs), and examines the extractive pressure exerted on natural resources by local communities as proxied by human population density, and their impacts on the most harvest‐sensitive forest vertebrate fauna. In both protected and unprotected areas, the author quantifies a response metric to hunting pressure in terms of the relative game biomass extracted from the most harvest‐sensitive components of the forest vertebrate fauna. Finally, the chapter discusses a number of wildlife conservation performance issues in relation to tropical forest SURs, and how these can be managed in the best interest of landscape‐scale forest biodiversity.
