Summary

This gives an overview of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) and other regulations, describing the purposes of hazard and risk assessment. It is the main driver of chemical safety within the European Union (EU). This chapter introduces the regulatory systems that demand the evaluation of risk for chemical substances that are intended to be used and placed on the market. It sets out the development of risk assessment in the European, global and national contexts. The key concepts of hazard and exposure are explained. Also, there is a summary of the regulation and assessment of hazardous chemicals outside of the European Union.
