Summary

This chapter gives a subjective view of the development of REACH to date, drawing upon the authors' experiences and some published sources. Some of the issues are still in their relative infancy; it should be remembered that REACH does not come to an end when all the phase-in substances are registered. For now, the impacts of REACH are manageable for large companies. However, in a market where speciality substances are vital for profitability, it is presenting huge challenges to smaller business units and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In respect of the promotion of health, safety and protection of the environment, REACH has been very effective overall
