As part of the assessment process, it is necessary to submit certain physico-chemical data on the substance to be registered. This must start with a clear understanding of the substance identity (see Section 4.1 and Appendix B of this book) and the physico-chemical properties that are associated with such substance. This permits a proper assessment of other endpoints, such as toxicology, environmental fate and exposure assessment, and is essential for ecotoxicology. The basic physico-chemical data endpoints (i.e. types of properties) required at Annex VII of the REACH regulation for all substances are melting point (mp), boiling point (bp), density, granulometry (particle size distribution), vapour pressure, octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow), water solubility, surface tension, flash point, flammability (including pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water), auto-flammability or self-ignition temperature, explosive properties, and oxidising properties. This chapter explains each of these properties, the use of (Quantitative) Structure-Activity Relationships ((Q)SAR) models and how they influence the other endpoints.
