Sleep medicine has been a specialty in a growth phase with interest both from medical practitioners and the general public. Research has demonstrated the significant impact that insufficient sleep and sleep disorders has on cognition and daytime function. This chapter will introduce the field of sleep medicine, describe normal sleep, and provide a basic outline of the sleep disorders.
