Summary

This chapter addresses the role of the occupational health nurse (OHN) in health and disability management, with a focus on the long-term benefits and rewards. These rewards, when managed appropriately, benefit the worker and the employer and lead to a healthier workplace. It lists the common factors associated with health-related workplace absences, and provides information on the costs of employee benefits. There are four key goals in successful management of the health of workers: (1) identifying risk, (2) enhancing access to and the provision of quality healthcare, (3) maintaining productivity for the workplace by keeping the worker on the job, and (4) cost control. The chapter illustrates the key principles for successful management of a workers' compensation claim. It further talks about the role of OHN in case management and workplace disability management.
