Summary

This chapter provides a basic guide as to “What to Expect” for infants through early school-age children concerning common feeding and communication milestones. After a review of typical milestones, common early feeding difficulties and management strategies are discussed. The chapter presents common speech and language delays or impairments. It concludes with a description of the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology and when to refer someone to those professionals, and highlights common treatment strategies for the early communicative disorders. Primary healthcare providers have the opportunity, especially within the context of the medical home, to be the first point of contact when parents have concerns about their child's feeding, communication, overall development, or behavior.
