Summary

This chapter presents suggestions for emphasizing the normalcy of pregnancy for low-risk women to encourage a physiologic approach to prenatal care and preparation for labor and birth. Building women's confidence in the normalcy of pregnancy and birth and their capability to grow and give birth to a healthy newborn are emphasized. A supportive approach to normal pregnancy commonly begins following the diagnosis of pregnancy. This approach can be initiated prior to conception and/or continued between pregnancies. The components of supportive prenatal care include anticipatory guidance, individualized and comprehensive care, and engaging the woman in active participation in decision making. The chapter finally talks about the strategies to help women achieve their preferred birth experience.
