Summary

The Natural Step summarizes the four system conditions as follows: in order for a society to be sustainable, nature's functions and diversity are not systematically: (i) Subject to increasing concentrations of substances extracted from the Earth's crust. (ii) Subject to increasing concentrations of substances produced by society. (iii) Impoverished by overharvesting or other forms of ecosystem manipulation. (iv) Resources are used fairly and efficiently in order to meet basic human needs worldwide. Over the last two years, through a series of activities, the Natural Step has worked with the Board of the initiative to review and map out the challenges for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), offer capacity-building workshops, gather stakeholder views, and provide recommendations on the formulation of the new industry charter.
