Abstract

The electronic structure of main group and transition metal clusters is reviewed in the context of electron-counting rules. A consistent framework for rationalising and extending these rules is presented in terms of Stone's tensor surface harmonic theory. Several applications are described to show how the theory works, along with predictions for cluster rearrangement mechanisms.
