Abstract

The title topic is reviewed with attention to alkane complexes, Shilov chemistry, alkane functionalization, Fenton reagents, oxidative addition pathways, sigma bond metathesis pathways, and surface-bound reagents. Methane to methanol chemistry is discussed and attempts to commercialize the reaction are described in connection with Periana systems. Some organic synthetic applications are also covered. Future challenges are posed.
