X-ray crystallography is the most extensively practised and widely applicable technique for determining molecular structures. These may be relatively small coordination complexes or metalloproteins with masses exceeding 1000 kda. The accuracy of the structures may range from a few thousands of Ǻngstrom for a small molecules to a few tenths of an Ǻngstrom for a protein. The major limitation of the technique is the requirement for well-diffracting crystals.
