This article reviews recent developments regarding the binding of metal centers to the outer surface of fullerenes and to the construction of nanoscale materials utilizing externally bound metal complexes. Developments in the coordination of single metal centers and metal clusters are discussed with particular emphasis placed on crystallographic characterization of the resulting assemblies. Electrochemical work on redox-active films prepared by reduction of fullerenes and metal complexes is reviewed. The formation of metal containing heterofullerenes—cages of carbon atoms and metal atoms—is examined. Finally, the formation of new crystalline phases by cocrystallization of fullerenes and various metal complexes is examined.
