Abstract

This paper provides a literature review from 2004 to the present, summarizing studies evaluating the use of nanomaterials and microporous materials as sorbents for the separation of metal ions from aqueous solutions. Materials such as microporous titanosilicates, mesoporous silicas, metal oxide nanoparticles, and carbon nanotubes exhibit increased loading and removal kinetics for a variety of metal ions compared to conventional sorbent materials. Also, incorporation of functional groups into these materials has shown promise to provide enhanced selectivity for a variety of metal ions.
