Abstract

Some essential concepts about rare earth magnetism are introduced in this chapter. First, ground-state multiplets of rare earth ions are described to understand the magnetic susceptibilities of rare earth paramagnetic salts at room temperature. To explain the deviation of magnetic susceptibilities with regard to spin and orbital moment only, spin-orbital coupling and ligand-field effect are introduced as corrections and they complicate the ground- and low-excited-state energy spectra. Finally, the exchange-coupling interactions between rare earths and other spin carriers are discussed to understand the rich magnetic phenomenon of rare earth-containing materials.
