Summary

As the prevalence of substance misuse in the elderly population increases, so too does the need for substance misuse services providing care for them. In this chapter, prevalence, aetiology, clinical manifestations, comorbidities and different forms of managements of substance misuse in the elderly are discussed. Special focus is given to drugs most relevant to the older adult population such as benzodiazepines. Providing services that are designed specifically for the elderly are among many challenges that health services face in dealing with substance misuse in the elderly. There is also a more urgent need for research in and the development of an evidence base for the treatment of substance misuse in this group.
