Summary

School is an environment in which children are asked to learn certain basic academic and social skills and in which their performance is judged and compared with that of other children. This chapter discusses the impact of poor performance on school success and the role of the child psychiatrist in identifying and resolving school failure. The components of the educational assessment are outlined as well as how and when the child psychiatrist might use this information. The history and role of consultation in the schools is also addressed in relation to the role of the child psychiatrist in schools. School culture and consultation models that are effective in schools are identified. The child psychiatrist is given techniques to consider when collaborating with school personnel.
