Summary

This chapter reviews basic anticonvulsant pharmacokinetics with emphasis on clinical aspects. It also provides an overview of pharmacogenomics and its potential application to care of epilepsy patients. The basic aspects of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination are considered, as well as the pharmacokinetic parameters pertinent to anticonvulsants. The concept of therapeutic drug monitoring is introduced. Individual differences in responses to drugs are considered in the light of recent advances in pharmacogenomics.
