John Langshaw Austin (1911–1960) is considered one of the most influential representatives of postwar Oxford ordinary language philosophy. Among his main contributions to the philosophy of language is the analysis of performative utterances and its subsequent development into a general conception of “language as action,” which gave rise to speech act theory.
