In linguistic terms, the European Union is a unique entity that boasts 23 official languages. Its institutions constantly generate texts in all languages, which is fertile ground for corpus linguists seeking large quantities of naturally occurring language. The overview presented here briefly considers the nature of these texts, the type of corpus-based research that has been accomplished or is underway, and hypothesizes about future applications of corpus-based research on EU documents.
